There are so many ways to use Cannabis these days it's incredible. Depending on what condition you are trying to treat and how you want to feel from it the options are plentiful. I think it's also very important to know that there are many ways to use it and reap the healing benefits without "getting high". Here is a breakdown on the various ways to use Cannabis on your healing journey.
Smoking Cannabis is possibly the most popular form of using it. Smoking is very effective for symptom relief and the relief comes pretty much instantly. I find that smoking gives you a bit more of an energetic buzz vs. vaporizing so it's helpful when you need a bit more energy. THC is activated by heat so the higher the temperature the more THC you are activating which could be the reason for the more energetic high. There is much debate whether this method does any damage to your lungs and up until now there have been no studies that prove that it does, on the contrary, many studies have proven it does not. The decision to smoke is very personal so if it feels right to you then do it, if not look into vaping as another option. Smoking is one of my favorite ways to consume cannabis. I also feel that it gives you a better body high then vaporizing which is great for pain relief.
Vaporizing or vaping has become a popular alternative to smoking. You still get the instant relief from symptoms as smoking, but it's thought to be a healthier alternative since it's just vapor instead of smoke that you inhale. The plant material does not combust in a vaporizer so the idea is that the cannabinoids come through in a steam or vapor. There are many types of vaporizers on the market to choose from. Some of my favorites are the Pax, which is very portable and the Firefly which actually heats with convection so it's able to get the cannabinoids a bit hotter while still vaporizing them. For me personally, I find that vaporizing is more of a head high and also feels a bit mellower. I prefer vaping towards the end of the day since it tends to be more relaxing, though everyone is different.
Vape pens are a new product on the market and are pretty awesome. They make it very easy to medicate discreetly and they are the easiest thing in the world to use. You literally just screw on a cartridge of your selected strain and vape. You can recharge it via USB and a charge lasts quite a while. I like to use Absolute Xtracts Blackberry Kush on my Bloom vape pen. I tend to prefer the Indicas on the vape pens.
One thing to be cautious of is some vape pen cartridges have additives or glycerin which it is not known how safe it is to vape that. I suggest finding cartridges that are 100% pure cannabis oil.
Hash is a very concentrated form of Cannabis and is also the most potent. Hash comes from the resin glands on Cannabis Flowers which are shaken off to produce Kief. Hash is typically smoked.
Edibles are a form of Cannabis which you eat. They can be very effective for pain and symptom management and also easy to consume in places where it could be difficult to smoke. They are typically made from Cannabutter or Cannabis Oil and come in pretty much anything you can imagine from candies, gummy bears, cookies, honey and even teas. Edibles can be very strong and also can take a while to kick in so be careful when you first start experimenting with them to find your optimal dose. The effects also last much longer than smoking or vaping.
CBD Edibles are amazing. They are similar to regular edibles but are high in CBD so you don’t get high. They have to have a small amount of THC to activate the CBD but not enough to feel it. These really saved my life. I have access to some amazing CBD Lozenges that would melt my Lyme pain away and let me get out of bed most days. It’s pretty instant pain relief too that lasts for a few hours. Most dispensaries sell some sort of CBD edible whether it's a lozenge, gummy or lollipop. These are EXCELLENT for daytime medicine as you get the amazing pain relief effects of cannabis without any psychoactive effects from it.
CBD Sublingual Sprays
These are a new item on the market made by Care By Design and are pretty effective. What is nice about these is they have various ratios of CBD : THC so you can really find what works best for you. For me, I find that I need a bit more THC to activate my CBD but some people may do well with very little THC. Since these are mostly a CBD product you don’t get much of a high, especially with the higher ratios like 18:1 and you get all the benefits of the pain relief.
Tinctures are a nice alternative to edibles. They can be a bit mellower than an actual edible but can be very effective for all sorts of ailments such as pain, nausea, sleep, anxiety etc. There are high THC tinctures as well as CBD and THCA which is the unheated form of THC, meaning there is no psychoactive component. THC is only psychoactive when heated.
Cannabutter is typically one of the base ingredients for Edibles but a lot of people have been healing their Lyme using Cannabutter everyday! It's fairly easy to make and the healing can be great. It can provide symptom relief as well as heal. If you are sensitive to dairy you can also use coconut oil. Coconut oil can also be useful if you are trying to kill Candida, as it is anti-fungal. It's best to start with a small dose and build up your dose each day as it has the potential to cause a herx if using it for Lyme Disease Treatment.
Juicing is a lesser known way to use cannabis but can be very beneficial. It is non-psychoactive because it is not being heated. Cannabis is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and has even been proven to be a neuroprotective so juicing is a great way to get a large amount of cannabis with no high.
I just started getting into transdermal patches. I am loving the Indica ones. The patches come fairly large and I cut it down into about 12-16 smaller squares and put them on a vein on my wrist. The medicine is delivered into your bloodstream transdermally and within 15-30 min you can feel relief. Mary’s Medicinals makes a variety of patches including CBD, Indica, Sativa and CBN which is supposed to be very helpful for sleep. They also have a very informative website that I highly recommend visiting to learn more about Cannabis in general.
Topicals are amazing for aches and pains. There are many different types, from lotions to roller bottles that you can rub on any area with pain. I was skeptical about these products but once I tried them I was sold! I would be in the worst pain and would rub the lotion on my body and all my pain would melt away with no high whatsoever. They are a dream come true, especially if you choose not to ingest cannabis but still want some of the benefits.
These should probably go under topicals but I think they are so amazing that I am giving them their own category. These are just like epsom salts for your bath but with cannabis. I can’t tell you how amazing these have been. I have gotten in a bath with them when I could barely walk because the pain was so bad and gotten out and could walk just fine! They are incredible and again since it's a topical you don’t get any high from it. For now they are only available in California, but check the dispensaries in your states to see if something similar is available. The brand I use is called Xternal Soak and they are AMAZING.
And now to the most powerful way to use cannabis. This is what truly heals people. It's not so much for symptom relief, but more for deep healing. After you take it for about a week you won’t feel any high either. If you are against feeling any sort of high, but want to take advantage of the healing properties you can even use a suppository.
Rick Simpson of Phoenix Tears was the pioneer in using Cannabis Oil. He used this to treat and cure himself from Cancer. Since then, many other people have been curing themselves from Cancer with Cannabis Oil as well. You may have heard of Rick Simpson Oil, which is basically Cannabis Oil that dispensaries sell. Since it has been gaining more publicity, many people have been exploring using Cannabis Oil to treat other diseases, such as Lyme and Alzheimers and its showing amazing results.
There are so many people in the Lyme Community that have quickly put their Lyme and Co-Infections into full remission with Cannabis Oil alone! It has been amazing! I know for me, once I added Cannabis Oil into my protocols is when I exponentially started getting better very quickly. Sometimes I even run out and don’t take it for some time and I don’t feel as good as when I do take it. It's truly magical and has no side effects!
It's good to stay on a maintenance dose even after your symptoms subside. There are no issues with taking it long term. On the contrary, it works to balance your immune system, repair mitochondria, reduce inflammation and is an antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral etc so it will keep your body in optimal health, even after your Lyme is clear.
There are various extraction methods used to make Cannabis Oil such Butane and CO2 Extractions which are not the cleanest methods. FECO (Full Extract Cannabis Oil) is the best extraction method and it's fairly easy to make. I have made it myself and created an easy step by step guide on how to do it yourself. Some dispensaries sell the oil already made but you won’t have any control over strains or extraction methods so if possible, its best to make your own. Using a high THC Indica strain seems to be the most beneficial to Lyme Patients.
I want to briefly touch on the CBD Oil craze and make it clear that it is NOT Cannabis Oil and it is NOT healing. There are many websites that have popped up all over the internet saying that they are selling healing CBD Oil and that it is legal in all 50 states etc. These are really just a scam. What they are selling is a byproduct of the industrial hemp industry and is really just a waste product extracted with chemicals. There is nothing healing about these oils and they are being sold very expensively. Also, a lot of research has proven that in order for CBD to be activated you need some THC and that is only available from the Cannabis plant, not the Hemp plant. CBD with THC is only sold in states where Medical Marijuana is legal. Please don’t get fooled into buying this industrial waste product. If you want a high CBD Cannabis Oil you can make one from a high CBD Strain such as AC/DC or Cannatonic. Keep in mind to heal and kill Lyme you need a higher THC strain as it is a stronger antibacterial.
Weed Maps is a great way to find dispensaries and specific products. Its one of my favorite apps:)
If you are still not convinced of the power of Cannabis, here is information with 42 of the top studies that show Cannabis can cure Cancer.
