Gluten Free Foodie’s Guide to Austin, Texas
/Traveling as a celiac can be tricky, but Austin is one of those cities that makes it feel easy and even exciting. Whether you're looking for clean, nourishing meals or indulgent bites you never thought you could eat again, Austin has options that are both delicious and celiac-safe.
During my recent trip, I explored a handful of restaurants that completely exceeded my expectations. Some were fully gluten free, others were incredibly accommodating and aware, and all of them made me feel like I could relax and enjoy my meal without the stress.
Here’s a look at where I ate, what I loved, and a few spots I’m already planning to hit next time I’m in town.
Dedicated Gluten-Free Restaurants
The Well
The Well was the first stop on my Austin food tour, and it completely set the tone for the trip. From the moment I walked in, I knew I was in good hands. The space is calm, modern, and designed with wellness in mind, and the menu reflects that same energy.
Everything here is gluten free, dairy free, seed oil free, soy free, refined sugar free, and non-GMO. It’s incredibly rare to find a restaurant this clean and thoughtful, let alone one where every single dish tastes as good as it looks.
We started with the salmon tartare and heirloom tomato salad, both plated beautifully and bursting with freshness. For our entrees, we had the pasture-raised chicken and sustainable salmon. Each dish felt nourishing but still indulgent.
And yes, dessert was a must. The avocado chocolate mousse was silky and rich, and the organic apple crisp was perfectly spiced and comforting and they were both refined sugar free! This is one of those places where you feel good while you’re eating and even better afterward. The Well is a can’t-miss stop if you're visiting Austin. The best part is they have 3 locations in Austin, so no matter where your exploring takes you, there should be a Well location in a short distance.
Nomade
Nomade was one of the most visually stunning and vibey restaurants I’ve been to in a while. It felt like walking into a slice of Tulum, with earthy decor, hanging plants, moody lighting, and four distinct seating areas, each with its own feel. But as beautiful as the space was, the food was even better.
The menu is 100 percent gluten free and seed oil free, with a strong plant-based focus and creative Latin-inspired flavors. It’s the kind of menu that makes you want to try everything, and we did our best.
We indulged on the scallop crudo, hamachi ceviche, tuna crudo, and tempura avocado. Each dish was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully plated. The raw bar alone is worth the visit.
For dessert, we ordered the gluten free churros and flan. I can’t even remember the last time I had churros, and these were everything I hoped they’d be. Crispy, warm, and not overly sweet. The flan was silky, deeply flavored, and one of the best I’ve ever had. Nomade is a perfect example of a place that doesn’t just accommodate gluten free dining but celebrates it.
ATX Cocina
ATX Cocina was our final dinner in Austin, and it was the perfect way to wrap up the trip. The entire restaurant is 100 percent gluten free and seed oil free, which immediately puts it on the list of safe spaces for celiacs.
The menu is modern Mexican, and everything we ordered was bursting with flavor and fresh ingredients. We started with a couple of ceviches and followed up with rich, satisfying mains. The balance of flavor, spice, and freshness was spot on.
The restaurant itself is lively and stylish, perfect for a night out with friends or a fun dinner date. It’s so rare to be able to order freely and enjoy Mexican food without worrying about hidden gluten in sauces or fryers.
ATX Cocina nails the vibe, the food, and the safety. This one is definitely staying on my rotation for future visits.
Not 100% Dedicated Gluten Free, But Safe!
Ten Ten
Finding sushi that’s safe for celiacs is no easy task, but TenTen really impressed me. While it’s not a fully gluten free restaurant, they are incredibly aware and take celiac concerns seriously. Only a few items on the menu contain gluten, and the kitchen is careful about cross-contact.
The vibe is sleek and modern, perfect for a date night or a nice evening out. We started with the tuna tataki and yellowtail carpaccio with truffle, both melt-in-your-mouth good. The fish was incredibly fresh and the flavors were bold without being overpowering.
We followed that with the chef’s sashimi selection, a beautiful assortment of the freshest cuts, and the cucumber-wrapped chirashi roll. That roll was a standout, light, crunchy, and packed with flavor.
To end the meal, we shared the raspberry yuzu sorbet, which was bright, tart, and so refreshing after a rich and savory dinner. I wish more sushi restaurants handled gluten free dining this well. TenTen is a must if you’re craving sushi in Austin.
